Meet your teacher
Rob Risley
Thanks for your interest in taking guitar lessons with me! If you’re considering guitar lessons for yourself or your child, it’s important to make sure you find the right teacher. Allow me to share a bit about myself and my philosophy.
Guitar has been my passion in life for the past 25+ years. I have a Master’s degree in Music Education from the University of Massachusetts Lowell. In late 2020, I moved to the Bay Area where I’ve performed with numerous bands (Phil and Rob, Pacific Riot, Misspent Youth). I’ve taught hundreds of students over the years ranging from ages 6 to 60.
My teaching philosophy is all about developing and encouraging one’s passion for music and the guitar. I don’t use cookie-cutter lesson books (who’s passionate about those???) Instead we’ll learn the songs YOU want to play. Whether it’s rock, pop, country, metal, or anything in between, my goal is to get you playing the music you love.

For a complete beginner, we’ll start with the very basics: the parts of the guitar, how to tune, basic picking and strumming, and how to read tabs and chord charts. We’ll also get started on one or two simple songs.
Students will also gain access to a private Notion website where we’ll track their lessons and provide additional resources.

8 is the youngest I’d recommend. It may be possible to start earlier but the required motor skills won’t be quite as developed and progress will be slower.

Electric is generally easier on the fingers while acoustic is a bit more straightforward requiring less gear.
See our Buyer’s Guide for more info and suggestions on picking out the right guitar.

Playing an instrument like the guitar can improve brain function, reduce stress, boost confidence, and improve fine motor skills.
In an age of AI, screen-addiction, and brain-rot, these benefits are more important than ever.

It’s up to you! The goal is to play the music you love because that’s gonna make you keep wanting to play.
For younger students who haven’t developed their personal taste in music yet, they can expect to learn lots of classic pop and rock songs.
